Before we could start excavating the archeological remains, we had to do a lot of preparation

The site lies under this mound of sand

In 2004, we had tried to protect the eroding section

Our first job was to remove the net and sandbags

We then cut the turves by hand, stacking them so that they could be replaced at the end of the dig

We decided to use the turves to construct the walls of our site hut

We used a machine to remove the upper layers of windblown sand...

...and when the machining had finished, we placed debris netting along the edges of the excavation area to prevent sand from blowing around

We then cleared the whole area of the last remnants of sand with shovels...

...and finished constructing the site hut
