Soils
A range of analytical techniques will be applied in 2009 to soil samples taken during the excavations, in order to illuminate what people did in different parts of the site and how certain deposits formed. Geochemical techniques such as phosphate analysis and magnetic susceptibility analysis will be used to show concentrations of organic waste, in-situ burning and industrial activity. Thin sections through sequences of deposits will be subjected to micromorphological analysis, which can identify very thin layers of trample or accumulation, shedding light on how layers formed, through what activities, whether they built up slowly or rapidly and what kinds of fuel were being used.
