Ornaments

Analysed by Martin Goldberg and Fraser Hunter (National Museums of Scotland)

Part of a shale bangle was found outside the building.  After it broke the ends were carved into tenons so that it could be used as part of another ornament.  The raw material must have been imported to Shetland, an the efforts put into its repair show that it was valued.  A blue globular bead made of very bubbly glass was also found in a midden outside Structure 5.

A small, delicate disc bead made of marine ivory came from Structure 5.  This material – from a whale, dolphin, seal or other aquatic mammal – would have been relatively hard to come by.
