Gallery 2009
Excavations in 2009 were again focussed on the site of the 1767 – 1779 salt works. We finished off the possible pan house in Trench 4 and opened up more of the ‘Salt mans House’ in Trench 2. The best discoveries of the season were Kirk’s ‘Intended Wagon Road’ in Trench 7, and a mound of clinker from industrial fires, which also included chunks of pan scratch or stone scratch – the first direct evidence of salt panning so far!
